DIS'12 workshop in Newcastle, UK
(DIY)biology: Designing for Open Source Science

Dr Nicola Stock is the Education Officer at Centre for Life, a hands-on science centre in Newcastle, UK. Using her research background in molecular virology, Nicola is involved in the development and delivery of DNA-based projects for schools at Centre for Life, which range from simple, 1.5 hour gel electrophoresis workshops to full-day laboratory experiences for school students.

This year Nicola led Centre for Life's contribution to the Wellcome Trust-funded 'Hands-on DNA: Exploring Evolution' project which trained and equipped science centres across the UK to deliver DNA workshops to schools and led laboratory workshops for the international 'Xplore Health' project which focused on the role of genetically modified bacteria in healthcare research.

Centre for Life is also a venue for adult and family engagement with science and Nicola is interested in using in-house expertise in hands-on biology to incorporate DIY Bio projects into upcoming public events, including Newcastle ScienceFest 2013.
